An Immersive Electronic Soundscapes with Deadmau5/TESTPILOT
Artist: deadmau5 / TESTPILOT
EP Title: some ep
Label: mau5trap
Release Date: 19/07/2024
The latest release from Deadmau5, both as himself and under his TESTPILOT alias, offers a 32-minute progressive electronic journey across four tracks. Each piece provides a distinct sonic adventure, blending the familiar with the innovative, and showcases Deadmau5‘s mastery of creating immersive, detailed soundscapes.
Quezacotl
The EP opens with “Quezacotl“, a single that embodies the signature Deadmau5 sound with its distinct synths and spacious drop. The beginning of the track is reminiscent of his earlier works, immediately pulling you into his world. The immersive, progressive nature of the song would fit seamlessly on any of his classic albums, creating a sense of nostalgia while also feeling fresh and new.
Wet
“Wet“, a track from Deadmau5‘s alter ego TESTPILOT, diverges from his usual style while maintaining a recognisable connection. The “wet” synth sound here is intriguing, leaving you to wonder if the name inspired the sound or vice versa. This track leans darker, with industrial vibes that grow increasingly chaotic around the 6-minute mark. It provokes a feeling of disorientation, with notes that stray from the established rhythm, creating an uneasy, almost uncomfortably thrilling sensation before settling back into something more familiar. This unpredictability makes it a standout piece on the EP.
Sever
“Sever” introduces us an ethereal ambiance before dropping into a high-energy, futuristic car race vibe. Its techno sound is straightforward, perhaps less emotionally triggering than the other tracks but still compelling. This track, with its driving beat and atmospheric elements, finds its place in the rotation easily, even if it doesn’t stir as many feelings.
Input Output
Finally, “Input Output“, a song teased in live shows, lives up to the anticipation. The opening synth surprises and delights, leading into a beautiful melody that builds to a euphoric peak before pulling back into a beat-driven drop. It’s no surprise that early feedback from fans has been overwhelmingly positive. The track encapsulates a rising sensation, making you feel like you’re ascending with the music.
I’m not usually a progressive house or techno fan, but Deadmau5 has a way of drawing you into his world, immersing you with a blend of familiar and innovative sounds. Again in “some ep“, Deadmau5 shows us his meticulous attention to detail creates a captivating experience that always leaves me in awe.
